The old symbol is told to be for protection and good luck, and according to one interpretation, the four loops on the symbol depict the spirits of the four cardinal directions, which support the heaven above the earth. (taivaannaula.org)

The symbol is known in Finland/Karelia as Siivilänpesonen, but I also found the same symbol in old Ukrainian folk art, where it is called Krynytsia (Well).
The meaning to the symbol is told to be:
The well, marked by crossed diagonal lines, symbolizes the link between worlds - like a real well that draws not just water, but ancestral memory. Alongside it, the fertility rune invokes abundance and continuity of life.
